About This Calculator

Sales Tax Explained

Everything you need to know about calculating, adding, and removing sales tax.

How to Calculate Sales Tax

Adding tax is straightforward: Tax Amount = Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100). Total Price = Price + Tax Amount. For example, a $100 item at 8% tax has $8 tax and a $108 total.

To reverse-calculate pre-tax price from a total: Pre-Tax Price = Total ÷ (1 + Tax Rate ÷ 100). A $108 total at 8% tax = $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100 pre-tax.

US Sales Tax Rates

Sales tax in the US is set at the state and local level — there is no federal sales tax. Rates range from 0% (Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, Alaska) to over 10% in some combined state/city/county rates. The national average combined rate is approximately 7.12% (2024).

VAT vs. Sales Tax

Sales tax is collected only at the final point of sale (retail). VAT (Value Added Tax) is collected at every stage of the supply chain but ultimately paid by the end consumer. Most countries outside the US use VAT. Common VAT rates: UK 20%, EU average 21%, Australia GST 10%, Canada GST 5%.

FAQ

Sales Tax Questions Answered

Common questions about calculating and understanding sales tax.

How do I calculate sales tax on a price?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate divided by 100. Tax = Price × (Rate ÷ 100). For a $150 purchase at 7% tax: $150 × 0.07 = $10.50 tax, for a total of $160.50. To get a percentage shortcut: a 7% tax means the total is 107% of the original price, so multiply by 1.07.

What is the average sales tax in the US?

The combined state and local sales tax rate in the US averages approximately 7.12% as of 2024, according to the Tax Foundation. State rates range from 0% (five states have no sales tax) to 7.25% (California base rate). Combined with local rates, some areas in Tennessee and Louisiana exceed 10%. There is no federal sales tax in the US.

How do I reverse-calculate pre-tax price from a total?

Use the formula: Pre-Tax Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + Tax Rate ÷ 100). For example, if you paid $162 and the tax rate was 8%: $162 ÷ 1.08 = $150 pre-tax. The tax amount was $162 – $150 = $12. This is essential for extracting pre-tax values from receipts for bookkeeping.

Is sales tax the same as VAT?

No. Sales tax is collected only at the point of final sale and is used primarily in the US. VAT (Value Added Tax) is collected at each stage of production and distribution but ultimately borne by the consumer — it's used in over 170 countries. While both result in the consumer paying tax, VAT is more complex for businesses to administer because they must track input tax credits. For end consumers, the math for calculating total cost is the same for both.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five US states have no state-level sales tax: Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska. However, Alaska allows local jurisdictions to impose sales taxes, so some areas within Alaska do have local sales tax. If you're selling to customers in these states, you generally don't collect state sales tax, though economic nexus rules and marketplace facilitator laws may still apply.
